The worming treatment recommended for your cat will depend on their age and lifestyle. Both roundworms and tapeworms can easily be picked up from a hunting cat’s prey, but also via other routes, including kittens contracting worms from their mother. If you see little white, mobile “rice grains” around the anus, these are tapeworm segments, however the absence of visible worms on the cat or in the faeces does not guarantee that the cat is not infected. Preventing worm infestations is especially important if you have young children in the house.

Worming Kittens

Your kitten may have acquired worms when being fed by its mother. Naturally, at this early stage they are less able to compensate for the blood and nutritional loss caused by worms. It is therefore important for the health of your new kitten to treat it for roundworms.

How to Worm Your Kitten

Panacur (liquid)

This is an extremely effective round wormer. Panacur must be administered to kittens over a course of three consecutive days. This can be given from weaning. However, it is not effective against all types of tapeworm.

MILBACTOR (tablet)

This is a multi-wormer and is effective against roundworms, tapeworms and lungworm. It can be safely given in kittens over 6weeks of age and that weigh at least 0.5kg.

Prinovox (spot-on)

This is effective against roundworm and fleas. Prinovox can be used on kittens from 9 weeks weighing at least 1kg.

Broadline (Spot-on)

This is a very safe product free from organophosphates, which kills fleas on contact by targeting their nervous system. It is not absorbed into the pet’s body but remains attached to proteins in the pet’s skin and skin glands.

It can be used on kittens as young as 7 weeks old as long as they weigh more than 0.6kg.

Broadline is applied to the skin on the back of the neck of the pet and spreads over the entire surface of the pet’s body within 24 hours.

  • Broadline not only kills the adult flea, it protects against re-infestation for 4 weeks.
  • It also inhibits flea eggs, flea larvae and pupae for 4 weeks.
  • It eliminates ticks within 48 hours and protects against re-infestation for 3 weeks.
  • Broadline also kills tapeworm and roundworm.
