Hypertension In Cats

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is very common in cats over 10 years of age. It is associated with a range of serious health issues such as kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. Hypertension can lead to blindness if left untreated.

What Cats Should be Checked for Hypertension?

  • Cats over 10 years of age.

Hypertension Warning Signs

  • High blood pressure in cats usually presents with no clinical symptoms until damage has been done.
  • This is why we advise routine monitoring of your cat's blood pressure once a year for cats over 10, and more regularly if are shown to have hypertension.

Blood Pressure Checks with the Vet Nurse

Blood pressure checks with the nurse are 20 minute appointments and cost £10. If any abnormal clinical signs are noted, the vet nurse will advise you to make an appointment with the vet for a full consultation to discuss the issue further and explore treatment options. Please note that vet nurses are not allowed to diagnose, and can only advise you whether your cat's blood pressure is within the normal ranges.

Blood Pressure Checks and Senior Wellness Clinics

You can combine having your cat's blood pressure checked with our Senior Wellness Clinic. This provides your cat with a full MOT for a total cost of £59.

My Cat Requires Regular Blood Pressure Monitoring

If your cat has hypertension and requires regular monitoring, you can now take advantage of our 20 minute nurse appointments rather than having to leave your cat with us. Studies have shown that it is less stressful for a cat to have its owner with it and have their blood pressure checked during a short appointment than being admitted into the practice.
